Max Benton - Project Assistant / Instructor

Max first came to us in 2012. He completed an Entry Level 3 qualification, and was recognised by the instructors as hard-working, self-motivated and passionate about cars. Not only was his passion for cars recognised, but his heart to help other students was as well. Max expressed an interest in volunteering and started to come and help in his spare time. Max went on to college to complete a Level 2 Diploma and NVQ in Light Motor Vehicle Maintenance, and joined the team as Project Assistant and Instructor in September 2014 and worked alongside Angus to deliver all the programmes we offer. During his time with us he completed his Level 3 qualification before leaving in November 2017 to further his career by taking a post as a technician at a Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) dealership.

Angus Vinicombe (Project Manager /  Senior Instructor)

Angus lives in Essex, but also has a Narrow Boat which is moored up on the River Kennet near Auto Skills and he lives aboard that during the week, returning home at weekends.

Angus bought his first vehicle at the age of 14. It was a 1962 Morris Minor and he carried out a complete restoration and rebuild, which was featured in ‘Practical Classics’ magazine in 1995. Since then, he has restored and rebuilt many classic cars, as well as restoring and modifying many Land Rovers and performance cars. He studied Engineering at college, passing the course with all modules at Merit or Distinction (and being awarded student of the year for two consecutive years), and more recently has obtained a Level 3 C&G Diploma in Motor Vehicle maintenance and repair. He also has extensive experience (in excess of 20 years) of working with young people both in a voluntary and employed capacity, and joined Auto Skills from a successful Alternative Education project in East London.

Angus took over the running of Auto Skills in June 2014,and the project has seen many changes under his leadership, and is enjoying a steady increase in student numbers which is helping to ensure long term sustainability of the project..

Connor Hill - Project Worker

Connor completed his Level 1 Diploma with Auto Skills in his free time while he was still at school. He then completed a traineeship followed by Level 2 apprenticeship with Auto Skills as his work placement. He worked alongside Max and Angus ensuring everything ran smoothly - both in the office and the workshop, then took over Max's role in November 2017. He has recently completed his Level 2 and enrolled on his Level 3 Apprenticeship.  Connor has his own car (a classic 1991 Rover Metro bought when he was 14) and is a very keen and skilled go-kart driver. He is also an FA qualified Mini-Soccer referee and Level 1 Coach.

The picture on the left was taken just before his school leaver's prom - his transport was naturally one of the rally cars that Auto Skills looks after!  in fact he spent the few days beforehand helping us rebuild the engine - which was completed with less that 12 hours to spare!
